Indications
- Tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp)
- Tinea corporis (ringworm of the body)
- Tinea pedis (athlete's foot)
- Tinea unguium (onychomycosis; ringworm of the nails)
- Tinea cruris (ringworm of the thigh)
- Tinea barbae (barber's itch)
Mode of Action
Fungistatic; inhibits fungal cell mitosis and nuclear acid synthesis; interferes with spindle and cytoplasmic microtubules; binds to keratin in human cells
Dosage
- Accurate diagnosis: essential
- Medication period:
- Tinea capitis: 4-6 weeks
- Tinea corporis: 2-4 weeks
- Tinea pedis: 4-8 weeks
- Tinea unguium: at least 4 months for fingernails, at least 6 months for toenails
- General measures: regarding hygiene observed to control sources of infection or reinfection
- Adults:
- Tinea corporis, cruris, capitis: 500 mg daily
- Tinea pedis, unguium: 1.0 gm daily
- Children:
- 30-50 pounds: 125-250 mg daily
- Over 50 pounds: 250-500 mg daily
Administration
- Taken with food
- Take immediately after meals
Interaction
- Patients on warfarin-type anticoagulant therapy may require dosage adjustment
- Concomitant use of barbiturates depresses Griseofulvin activity
- Reduces efficacy of oral contraceptives
- Increases incidence of breakthrough bleeding

- Porphyria
- Hepatocellular failure
- Hypersensitivity to griseofulvin
- Pregnancy
