Indications
- Prevention and treatment of Candida infections of the oral cavity, esophagus, and intestinal tract
- Prophylaxis against oral candidiasis in newborns born of mothers with vaginal candidiasis
- Prophylaxis of Candida overgrowth during courses of broad-spectrum antibiotics
Pharmacology
- Antifungal antibiotic with fungistatic or fungicidal activity against a variety of yeasts and fungi, including Candida albicans
- Exerts antifungal activity by binding to sterols in the fungal cell membrane, resulting in loss of cellular constituents
Dosage & Administration
- Children: Recommended dosage for intestinal and oral candidiasis, prophylaxis in newborns, and elderly with intestinal candidiasis
- Adult: Recommended dosage for treatment of intestinal or esophageal candidiasis, prophylaxis of intestinal candidiasis, prophylaxis to suppress the overgrowth of Candida albicans in patients receiving broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, and treatment of dental sores and oral infection
Contraindications
- No known contraindication to the use of Nystatin
Side Effects
- Occasional reports of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea with high doses of Fefun
- No systemic effects or allergic reactions associated with its oral dose
