Indications

  • Prevention and treatment of Candida infections of oral cavity, esophagus, and intestinal tract
  • Prophylaxis against oral candidiasis
  • Prophylaxis of Candida overgrowth during courses of broad-spectrum antibiotics

Pharmacology

  • Antifungal antibiotic
  • Fungistatic or fungicidal activity against variety of yeasts and fungi including Candida albicans
  • Binds to sterols in the fungal cell membrane
  • Loss of potassium and other cellular constituents

Dosage & Administration

  • Children:
    • 1,00,000 units (1 ml) dropped into the mouth four times daily for oral candidiasis
    • 1,00,000 units (1 ml) once daily for prophylaxis in newborns
  • Adult:
    • 5,00,000 units (5 ml) by mouth 3 or 4 times daily for intestinal or esophageal candidiasis
    • 10,00,000 units (10 ml) daily for prophylaxis of intestinal candidiasis in adults
    • 10,00,000 units (10 ml) daily for prophylaxis during broad spectrum antibiotic therapy
  • Elderly: 5,00,000 units (5 ml) suspension four times daily for those unable to swallow tablets

Contraindications

No known contraindication to the use of Nystatin

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea with high doses of Fungistin
