Indications
- Prevention and treatment of Candida infections of oral cavity, esophagus, and intestinal tract
- Prophylaxis against oral candidiasis in newborns born to mothers with vaginal candidiasis
- Prophylaxis of Candida overgrowth during courses of broad-spectrum antibiotics
Pharmacology
- Antifungal antibiotic
- Fungistatic or fungicidal activity against a variety of pathogenic and nonpathogenic yeast and fungi
- Binds to sterols in the fungal cell membrane, leading to loss of cellular constituents
Dosage & Administration
- Children dosage for oral candidiasis: 1,00,000 units (1 ml) dropped into the mouth four times daily
- Adult dosage for intestinal or esophageal candidiasis: 5,00,000 units (5 ml) by mouth 3 or 4 times daily
- Elderly dosage for intestinal candidiasis: 5,00,000 units (5 ml) suspension four times daily
Contraindications
- No known contraindication to the use of Nystatin
