Indications

• Prevention and treatment of Candida infections of oral cavity, esophagus, and intestinal tract
• Prophylaxis against oral candidiasis
• Prophylaxis of Candida overgrowth during broad-spectrum antibiotics courses

Pharmacology

• Antifungal antibiotic
• Fungistatic or fungicidal activity against a variety of yeast and fungi
• Exerts antifungal activity by binding to sterols in the fungal cell membrane
• Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract

Dosage & Administration

• Dosage for children and adults
• Treatment of oral candidiasis (thrush)
• Prophylaxis in newborns
• Treatment of intestinal or esophageal candidiasis
• Prophylaxis of intestinal candidiasis in adults
• Prophylaxis to suppress the overgrowth of Candida albicans in patients receiving broad-spectrum antibiotics
• Treatment of dental sores and oral infection
• Dosage for elderly people with intestinal candidiasis

Contraindications

• No known contraindication to the use of Nystatin

Side Effects

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea with high doses of Nystatin
• No systemic effects or allergic reactions associated with its oral dose
