Indications
- Treatment of fungal corneal ulcers
- Treatment of keratitis
Pharmacology
- Fungistatic action
- Inhibition of cytochrome P-450 14-α demethylase
- Accumulation of lanosterol
- Decreased concentration of ergosterol
- Alteration of cellular membrane
- Increased membrane permeability
- Leakage of essential elements
- Impaired uptake of precursor molecules to DNA
Dosage & Administration
- Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s)
- Recommended frequency: 5 times daily
Interaction
- Potential to alter pharmacokinetics of certain drugs undergoing hepatic metabolism
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to azoles
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated
- Reported eosinophilia in some patients
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy category C
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
- Excretion in breast milk in concentration similar to plasma
Precautions & Warnings
- May result in overgrowth of non-susceptible strains of candida other than Candida albicans
