Mechanism of Action
- Allopurinol inhibits xanthine oxidase, the enzyme responsible for converting hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid. By inhibiting this enzyme, allopurinol decreases the production of uric acid, reducing serum urate levels.
