Mechanism of Action

Typical Dosage
- The usual starting dose is 25 mg taken orally three times daily with the first bite of each main meal.

Geriatric Dosage
- Dose selection should be cautious due to the greater frequency of decreased hepatic, renal, or cardiac function, and concomitant diseases or other drug therapy.

- B - Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
Lactation Safety
- Acarbose is excreted in breast milk. Consider the benefits of breastfeeding along with the mother's clinical need for acarbose and any potential adverse effects on the breastfed child.
