Mechanism of Action
- Dexlansoprazole is a PPI that suppresses gastric acid secretion by specific inhibition of the H+/K+-ATPase in the gastric parietal cell.
Indications
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Erosive esophagitis
- Helicobacter pylori eradication in combination therapy
Common Dosage Forms
- Delayed-release capsules
Typical Dosage
- 30 mg orally once daily for GERD maintenance therapy
- 60 mg orally once daily for 8 weeks for healing of erosive esophagitis
Pediatric Dosage
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established
Geriatric Dosage
- No dosage adjustment is necessary in the elderly, but caution should be exercised
Side Effects
- Common side effects include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, flatulence, and headache
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to dexlansoprazole or any component of the formulation
Pregnancy Category
- Category B - Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
Lactation Safety
- Caution advised, excretion in breast milk is unknown and potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants
