Mechanism of Action
- Inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase
Indications
- Treatment of bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections
Common Dosage Forms
- Tablet
Typical Dosage
- 400 mg once a day for 7-14 days for most infections
Pediatric Dosage
- Safety and efficacy not established in children under 18 years
Geriatric Dosage
- Dose adjustment may be needed based on renal function
Side Effects
- Common: Nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache
- Serious: Tendon rupture, central nervous system effects, allergic reactions
Contraindications
- History of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone use

Lactation Safety
- Use with caution, excretion in breast milk unknown
Drug Interactions
- Avoid concomitant use with multivitamins or mineral supplements containing iron, calcium, zinc, or magnesium as they can reduce absorption
