Treat Yourself: My RA Self-Care Indulgences

Prioritizing Self-Care: A Guide for Individuals with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Having navigated life with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) for over ten years, I understand the challenges of balancing self-care with daily responsibilities, whether during graduate studies or in a full-time job. Self-care is not just an indulgence—it's a vital part of managing my health effectively. Without it, living well with RA can become increasingly difficult.

Taking time to rejuvenate, even sporadically, can lead to significant improvements in both physical and mental well-being.

1. Indulge in Sweet Treats

We all deserve a little sweetness in our lives now and then. Even while I strive to maintain a nutritious diet to help manage my RA, there are moments when a comforting dessert can lift my spirits. I've learned to enjoy these treats without guilt, as moderation often trumps complete avoidance. After all, life is too short to deny oneself the joy of a cupcake!

2. Savor a Warm Beverage

A cup of warm tea, coffee, or hot chocolate can work wonders when stress levels rise. The warmth is soothing, making it an excellent way to find balance in a hectic day. I always keep a selection of various teas on hand to suit different moods and needs.

3. Take Mental Health Days

Through my academic and professional life, I was strongly focused on work and responsibilities, sometimes at the cost of my mental health. I recall my mother suggesting mental health days when I was younger, but I regret not taking that advice more seriously. Now, I recognize the value these breaks hold. I don’t consistently take days off, but when possible, I allocate some weekends to relax, recharge, and stay indoors.

4. Disconnect from Social Media

Similar to the importance of mental health days, stepping away from blogging and social media is essential for rejuvenation. While my online presence has its rewards, constant engagement can be overwhelming. Taking breaks allows me to regain perspective and clarity.

5. Refresh Your Look with a Haircut

I've come to appreciate the significance of regular haircuts, particularly as my RA symptoms affect my daily life. Moving from budget hairstyling to visiting a more upscale salon has transformed haircuts from a routine chore into a delightful experience.

6. Enjoy a Luxurious Bath

Though time is often scarce, I make it a point to indulge in a warm, relaxing bath every once in a while. This soothing ritual includes replenishing bubble bath products, creating an experience that turns my bathroom into a personal sanctuary, even if just temporarily.

7. Immerse Yourself in a Book

As an avid reader, I treasure the rare moments I can dedicate to a captivating book. Engaging with a well-written narrative offers an escape from daily life, allowing me to explore different perspectives and stories.

The Importance of Self-Care

For some, these suggestions might seem elementary, but for me, prioritizing self-care remains a challenge. The fear of missing out often makes it hard to take the necessary time for myself. However, as I grow older and life moves at a quicker pace, I increasingly realize how crucial self-care is. To be the best partner, child, sibling, employee, and friend, I must first take care of my own well-being. Recognizing that self-care is not selfish, but rather essential for functioning optimally in other roles, is the first step toward making it a priority.
