Description

Dosage & Administration

  • For adults: 10-20 mg (1-2 tablets or 10-20 ml suspension) every 6-8 hours daily
  • Maximum daily dose for adults is 80 mg
  • Children's dosage is based on body weight and age

Pharmacology

Interaction

  • Antagonized by anticholinergic drugs
  • Should not be given simultaneously with antacids and antisecretory drugs
  • Metabolism primarily through CYP3A4 pathway
  • Inhibited by drugs such as azole antifungals and macrolide antibiotics

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the drug
  • Neonates
  • Gastrointestinal hemorrhage, mechanical obstruction or perforation
  • Prolactin releasing pituitary tumor (prolactinoma)

Side Effects

  • Transient intestinal cramps
  • Rare extrapyramidal phenomena
  • Possible increase in plasma prolactin level
  • Rare allergic reactions such as rash and urticaria
