Description
- Dopamine antagonist medication
- Used to treat dyspeptic symptom complex
- Also used for acute nausea and vomiting
- Effective for Parkinson's disease-induced nausea and vomiting
DosageAndAdministration
- Should be taken 15-30 minutes before meals
- Usual recommended oral dose for adults: 10-20 mg every 6-8 hours daily
- Maximum dose for adults: 80 mg daily
- Dosage for children should be based on body weight
- Rectal administration for certain cases
Pharmacology
- Dopamine antagonist
- Blocks dopamine receptors in Chemoreceptor Trigger Zone and stomach
- Restores normal motility and tone of upper gastrointestinal tract
- Enhances antral and duodenal peristalsis
- Increases esophageal peristalsis and lower esophageal sphincter pressure
Interaction
- Anticholinergic drugs may antagonize the effect of domperidone
- Antacids and antisecretory drugs should not be given simultaneously
- Metabolism through CYP3A4
- Potential influence on absorption of concomitantly orally administered drugs
