Indications
- Treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
- Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) including urinary frequency
- Nocturia
- Incomplete emptying
- Urinary hesitancy
Pharmacology
- Selective antagonist of post-synaptic a1 adrenoreceptors
- Relaxes prostate smooth muscle
- Blocks prostatic a1 receptors
- Reduces resting urethral pressure
Dosage
- Recommended dose: 10 mg once daily after a meal for BPH
- 10 mg daily for acute urinary retention in patients 65 years and older
Administration
- Tablet should be swallowed whole
Interaction
- Contraindicated with alpha-1-receptor blockers
- To be taken into account with antihypertensive drugs, nitrates, potent CYP3A4 inhibitors like ketoconazole
- Potential interaction with general anaesthetics
Contraindications
- Postural hypotension in some subjects
- Caution in patients with acute cardiac failure
- Hypersensitivity to alpha-1-blockers
- Careful administration to patients being treated with antihypertensives
Side Effects
- Common: faintness/dizziness, headache
- Uncommon: syncope, malaise, vision abnormalities
- Rare: New onset, aggravation or recurrence of angina pectoris
- General: asthenia, chest pain
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not applicable due to indication
Precautions & Warnings
- Administration of general anesthetics could cause profound hypotension
- Stop if symptoms of angina pectoris start or worsen
Use in Special Populations
- Not demonstrated for children aged 2 to 16 years
Overdose Effects
- Patient should be hospitalised
- Conventional treatment of hypotension should take place
- Appropriate corrective treatment may be a vasoconstrictor
