Description
Algicon is indicated for the treatment of symptoms resulting from the reflux of acid, bile and pepsin into the esophagus. It can be used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux during concomitant treatment with or following the withdrawal of acid suppressing therapy. The pharmacology involves the formation of a gel by Sodium Alginate in reaction with stomach acid, and the formation of carbon dioxide bubbles by Potassium Bicarbonate. The raft formed by this combination prevents acid reflux and lasts for up to 4 hours. Algicon is available in tablet and suspension forms for different age groups, with precautions for patients with renal impairment and congestive cardiac failure. It has contraindications for patients with known hypersensitivity to Sodium Alginate and Potassium Bicarbonate. The product has a therapeutic class of Antacids and should be stored below 30°C temperature, away from light & moisture, and out of the reach of children.
