Description
- Benzimidazole Anthelmintic
- Broad Spectrum Anthelmintic

- Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization
- Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
- Depletes energy level in parasites
- Metabolized in the liver

Indications
- Single and mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, hydatid
Pharmacology
- Exerts anthelmintic effect by blocking glucose uptake
- Depletes energy level in susceptible helminths
- Binds and inhibits parasite tubulin polymerization
- Extensively metabolized, probably in the liver
- Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
- Extensive first-pass metabolism
Dosage & Administration
- 400mg as a single dose for certain infections
- In cases of strongyloidiasis or taeniasis, 400mg daily for 3 consecutive days
- Recommended dose for children of 1-2 years and children over 2 years
- Different dosage for hydatid disease (Echinococcosis)
- Recommended dose for giardiasis
Interaction
- No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions
Contraindications
- Neonates, pregnant women, children weighing less than 10kg
- No general reduction in dosage for children
- No evidence for dosage alteration in renal, hepatic or cardiac failure
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances

- Dizziness
- Changes in liver enzymes
- Reversible alopecia (rare)
- Rash
- Fever
- Blood disorders including leucopenia and pancytopenia
- Allergic shock if cyst leakage
- Convulsion and meningism in cerebral disease

- Blood counts and liver function tests before and during treatment
- Exclusion of pregnancy before treatment
