Indications

  • Single and mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, hydatid

Pharmacology

  • Exerts anthelmintic effect by blocking glucose uptake in helminths
  • Exerts anthelmintic effect by binding and inhibiting parasite tubulin polymerization
  • Extensively metabolized, probably in the liver
  • Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
  • Rapid extensive first-pass metabolism
  • Principal metabolite albendazole sulphoxide with anthelmintic activity
  • Excreted in the urine with other metabolites

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended doses for adults and children over 2 years
  • Recommended doses for children of 1-2 years
  • Not recommended for children under 1 year
  • Doses for hydatid disease (echinococcosis)
  • Dose for giardiasis

Interaction

Contraindications

  • Not normally used in neonates
  • Dose reduction for children weighing less than 10 kg
  • Avoid in pregnancy
  • No evidence to suggest dose alteration in renal, hepatic or cardiac failure

  • Blood counts and liver function tests before treatment and twice during each cycle
  • Breastfeeding caution
  • Exclude pregnancy before starting treatment
  • Constant medical supervision with regular monitoring for Echinococcosis treatment
