Recommended dosage
- Adults: 10-20 mg every 6-8 hours daily
- Children: 2-4 ml suspension/10 kg body weight every 6-8 hours daily

- Dyspeptic symptom complex
- Acute nausea and vomiting
- Parkinson's disease-induced nausea and vomiting
- Radiological studies for speeding barium transit
Pharmacological action
- Dopamine antagonist
- Blocks dopamine receptors in the Chemoreceptor Trigger Zone (CTZ) and stomach
- Restores normal motility and tone of the upper gastrointestinal tract
- Facilitates gastric emptying
- Enhances antral and duodenal peristalsis
- Regulates contraction of the pylorus
- Increases esophageal peristalsis and lower esophageal sphincter pressure
Interaction with other drugs
- Anticholinergic drugs: Antagonizes the antidyspeptic effect
- Metabolic pathway: Primarily through CYP3A4
- Inhibitors of CYP3A4:
- Azole antifungals
- Macrolide antibiotics
- HIV protease inhibitors
- Nefazodone
- Does not interfere with:
- Neuroleptics
- Dopaminergic agonists
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Neonates
- Gastrointestinal hemorrhage
- Mechanical obstruction or perforation
- Prolactin releasing pituitary tumor (prolactinoma)
Side effects
- Transient intestinal cramps
- Extrapyramidal phenomena (rare)
- Increase in plasma prolactin level leading to neuroendocrinological phenomena
- Rare allergic reactions like rash and urticaria
