Indications
- Treats septicaemia

Pharmacology
- Binds to penicillin binding proteins
- Inhibits transpeptidation in bacterial cell wall
- Causes bacterial cell death
- Broad spectrum bactericidal
- Active against gram-negative organisms
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for adults: 1 gm every 12 hours
- Dosage may vary according to severity of infection
- Dosage for children: 100-150 mg/kg/day
- Dosage for neonates: 50 mg/kg/day
- Single dose of 500 mg for gonorrhoea
Interaction
- Increased nephrotoxicity with aminoglycoside antibiotics
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefotaxime or cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Adverse reactions relatively infrequent and mild
- Effects include candidiasis, rashes, fever, transient liver enzyme rises, diarrhea
- Pseudomembranous colitis may rarely occur
- Rarely observed changes in renal function
- Hypersensitivity reactions reported
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established in human pregnancy
- Excreted in milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with gastrointestinal disease
- Dosage reduction in patients with renal insufficiency
- No evidence supporting dosage change in patients with renal dysfunction
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage adjustment in severe renal failure
- Dosage may require further adjustment according to infection course and patient condition
