Indications
- Indicated in single and mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, and hydatid
Description
- Benzimidazole anthelmintic
- Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
- Used in treatment of intestinal nematode infections
- Used in higher doses for the treatment of hydatid disease
- Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
- Has an inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activities
- Blocks glucose uptake in the susceptible helminths
- Exerts anthelmintic effect by depleting energy level of helminths
- Exerts its action by binding and inhibiting parasite tubulin polymerization
- Extensively metabolized, probably in the liver
- Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dose for adults & children over 2 years
- Recommended dose for children of 1-2 years
- Not recommended for children under 1 year
- Administration in cases of strongyloidiasis or taeniasis
- Administration in hydatid disease (Echinococcosis)
- Treatment regimen for cystic echinococcosis
- Treatment regimen for alveolar echinococcosis
- Administration in giardiasis
Interaction

Contraindications
- Not recommended for neonates
- Consideration for dose reduction in children weighing less than 10 kg
- Should not be given during pregnancy or to women thought to be pregnant
- No evidence to suggest alteration in dose for renal, hepatic or cardiac failure

- Gastrointestinal disturbances

- Dizziness
- Changes in liver enzymes
- Reversible alopecia (rarely)
- Rash
- Fever
- Blood disorders including leucopenia and pancytopenia
- Allergic shock if cyst leakage
- Convulsion and meningism in cerebral disease

- Albendazole pregnancy category: C
- Avoid usage in pregnancy and lactation unless benefits outweigh risks
