Indications
- Treats skin and soft tissue infections
- Treats respiratory tract infections
- Used in osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infection, meningitis, septicaemia
- Prophylactic agent for major surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibits formation of cell wall of bacteria
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Kills bacterial cell wall by interfering with peptidoglycan synthesis
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults, children (2-10 years), and children under 2 years
- Parenteral administration for adults, elderly, and children
Administration
- Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before meal
Interaction
- Concurrent use may result in increased level of Flupen in blood for prolonged period
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Common gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
- Rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Category B in pregnancy
- Excreted in human milk, caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in patients with allergic diathesis
Use in Special Populations
- Reduction in dose or extension of dose interval in severe renal failure

Reconstitution
- Used in other routes in conjunction with systemic therapy
- Administered in intraarticular and intrapleural injection
- Dissolved in sterile water and inhaled by nebuliser
