Description
- Flutec-DS is an antibiotic used for the treatment of infections caused by Gram-positive organisms, including penicillinase producing strains. It is effective in treating skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory tract infections, and other bacterial infections. It is available in oral and parenteral dosages and should be administered with caution in specific populations.
Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Prophylactic use during major surgical procedures
- Treatment of osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infection, meningitis, septicaemia
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms
- Inhibits cell wall formation of bacteria
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Useful against penicillinase-producing staphylococci
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
- Oral administration for children (2-10 years): Half of the adult dose
- Parenteral administration for adults: 250 mg-1 g four times daily
- Parenteral administration for children (2-10 years): Half of the adult dose
Administration
- Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before meal
Interaction
- Concurrent use with other drugs may result in increased levels of Flutec-DS in the blood
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side effects
- Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances
- Other reported side effects: rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice

- US FDA Pregnancy Category B
- Caution in pregnant and lactating women
Precautions and warnings
- Use with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in the treatment of patients with an allergic diathesis

- Reduction in dose in severe renal failure
