Description
- Phylopen is a bactericidal antibiotic used for the treatment of infections due to Gram-positive organisms, including penicillinase-producing staphylococci. It is effective in treating various conditions such as skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory tract infections, osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infection, meningitis, and septicaemia among others.
- Flucloxacillin, the active ingredient in Phylopen, acts by inhibiting the formation of the cell wall of bacteria and is particularly useful against penicillinase-producing staphylococci.
- Phylopen is available for oral and parenteral administration. The dosage varies for adults, children aged 2-10 years, and children under 2 years. It is recommended to administer oral doses 1 hour before a meal.
- Caution is advised when using Phylopen in patients with hepatic dysfunction or an allergic diathesis. Special consideration is required in severe renal failure. It is contraindicated in penicillin-hypersensitive patients. The drug is classified under penicillinase-resistant penicillins and has a US FDA Pregnancy Category of B. Caution is recommended when administering Phylopen to lactating mothers.
