Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Used for osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infection, meningitis, septicaemia
- Prophylactic agent for major surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms including penicillinase producing strains
- Inhibits the formation of bacterial cell wall
- Resistance to hydrolysis by penicillinase
- Bactericidal against penicillinase-producing staphylococci
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
- Oral administration for children (2-10 years): half of adult dose
- Parenteral administration for adults: 250 mg-1 g four times daily
Administration
- Oral doses administered 1 hour before meal
Interaction
- Concurrent use may result in increased level of Phylopen in blood
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side effects
- Common side effects of gastrointestinal tract such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Rashes, urticaria, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis reported
Pregnancy lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Excreted in human milk, caution needed during lactation
Precautions warnings
- Use with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in treatment of patients with allergic diathesis
Special populations
- Consider dose reduction in severe renal failure
