Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of osteomyelitis
- Treatment of endocarditis
- Prophylactic use during major surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms including penicillinase producing strains
- Little activity against Gram-negative bacilli
- Inhibits the formation of bacterial cell wall
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Particularly useful against penicillinase-producing staphylococci
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
- Parenteral administration for adults: 250 mg-1 g four times daily
- Adjusted doses for children
- Oral doses should be administered 1 hour before meals

Interaction
- Concurrent use may result in increased level of Sofa in blood for prolonged period
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Common gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Skin reactions such as rashes, urticaria, purpura
- Other reported side effects include fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice

- Caution in use during pregnancy and lactation due to limited human studies and excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in treatment of patients with allergic diathesis
Use in Special Populations
- In severe renal failure, consider reduction in dose or extension of dose interval
