Pharmacology
- Binds to penicillin binding proteins (PBPs)
- Inhibits transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis
- Bacterial cell wall inhibition
- Broad spectrum bactericidal action
- Active against gram-negative organisms
- Activity against gram-positive bacteria
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for adults: 1 gm every 12 hours
- Children dosage range: 100-150 mg/kg/day
- Neonates dosage: 50 mg/kg/day
- Dosage in gonorrhoea: 500 mg as a single dose
Interaction
- Increased nephrotoxicity with concomitant administration of cephalosporins and aminoglycoside antibiotics
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefotaxime or cephalosporin antibiotics
