Indications

Pharmacology
- Binds to penicillin binding proteins (PBPs)
- Inhibits peptidoglycan synthesis
- Broad spectrum bactericidal
- Active against gram-negative organisms
- Activity against gram-positive bacteria
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for adults: 1 gm every 12 hourly for mild to moderate infections
- Recommended dosage for children: 100-150 mg/kg/day
- Recommended dosage for neonates: 50 mg/kg/day
- Dosage for gonorrhoea: 500 mg as a single dose
Interaction
- Increased nephrotoxicity with aminoglycoside antibiotics
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefotaxime or the cephalosporin group of antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and transient
- Adverse effects include candidiasis, rashes, fever, transient rises in liver transaminase, and/or alkaline phosphatase, and diarrhea
- Pseudomembranous colitis may rarely occur
- Changes in renal function observed with high doses
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established in human pregnancy
- Excreted in the milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Prescribed with caution in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal disease
- Total daily dosage should be reduced in patients with renal insufficiency
- Continued dosage determined by degree of renal impairment
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage reduction in severe renal failure
- Dosage may require adjustment according to the course of infection and general condition of the patient
