Indications

Pharmacology

  • Binds to penicillin binding proteins (PBPs)
  • Inhibits final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis
  • Broad-spectrum bactericidal 3rd generation cephalosporin antibiotic
  • Active against gram-negative organisms
  • Active against gram-positive bacteria

Interaction

  • Increased nephrotoxicity with concomitant administration of cephalosporins and aminoglycoside antibiotics

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cefotaxime or cephalosporin group of antibiotics

  • No necessity of changing dosage in patients with profound renal dysfunction
