Description
- A fixed-dose combination of Amlodipine and Atenolol for the treatment of essential hypertension, angina pectoris, and post myocardial infarction patients.
Dosage
- Recommended dosage is one Amlodipine and Atenolol 5/25 mg tablet once daily, may be increased to two tablets daily as advised by physicians, and should be individualized.
Pharmacology
- Amlodipine inhibits calcium influx into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle, causing vasodilation and reduced blood pressure. Atenolol is a cardioselective beta-blocker, reducing blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand.
Interactions
- Interacts with disopyramide, ampicillin, oral antidiabetics, and insulin.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to either component, sinus bradycardia, heart block, cardiogenic shock, hypotension, congestive heart failure, poor left ventricular function.
Side effects
- Well tolerated overall with side effects including fatigue, headache, edema, nausea, drowsiness, anxiety, and depression.
Pregnancy and lactation
- Should be used in pregnancy only if benefits outweigh potential fetal risk. Not recommended for use by nursing mothers.
Precautions and warnings
- Caution in patients with airway obstruction, renal impairment, and severe liver damage. Caution against sudden drug withdrawal.
Overdose effects
- Overdose may lead to hypotension and congestive cardiac failure. Unabsorbed drugs can be removed by gastric lavage or activated charcoal administration. Symptomatic treatment is suggested.
