Indications

Composition

  • Sodium Chloride BP 1.30 gm per 500 ml preparation
  • Potassium Chloride BP 0.75 gm per 500 ml preparation
  • Trisodium Citrate Dihydrate BP 1.45 gm per 500 ml preparation
  • Glucose Anhydrous BP 6.75 gm per 500 ml preparation

Pharmacology

  • Preparation of oral rehydration salt
  • Composed of anhydrous glucose, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium citrate
  • Single formulation of glucose-based oral rehydration salt to treat or prevent dehydration from diarrhea of any etiology
  • Prevents acidosis due to electrolyte imbalance
  • Suitable for individuals of any age

Dosage

  • Daily dose equivalent to patients' fluid requirement for maintenance and replenishment of losses
  • Children less than 2 years: 50-100 mL (10 to 20 teaspoonful) after each loose stool or vomiting
  • Children 2 to 10 years: 100-200 mL (1/2 to 1 glass) after each loose stool or vomiting
  • Adults and children above 10 years: 200-400 mL (1 to 2 glass) after each loose stool or vomiting

Administration

  • Disperse full contents of the sachet in 500 mL of pure drinking water
  • Do not mix the oral saline with hot water or heat the prepared solution
  • Discard the unused prepared oral saline after 12 hours of preparation

  • No known drug interactions

Precautions & Warnings

  • Depressed renal function may need supplementation with parenteral fluids
  • Severe continuing diarrhea or critical fluid losses may need supplementation with parenteral fluids along with oral saline
