Indications

Composition

  • Sodium Chloride BP 1.30 gm
  • Potassium Chloride BP 0.75 gm
  • Trisodium Citrate Dihydrate BP 1.45 gm
  • Glucose Anhydrous BP 6.75 gm

Pharmacology

  • Contains anhydrous glucose
  • Consists of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium citrate
  • Treats or prevents dehydration from diarrhea of any etiology
  • Prevents acidosis due to electrolyte imbalance
  • Effective for individuals of any age

Dosage

  • Should be equivalent to patients' fluid requirement for maintenance and replenishment of losses
  • Mother should not stop breastfeeding during therapy for children
  • Normal food should be continued for adults during therapy
  • Children less than 2 years: 50-100 mL after each loose stool or vomiting
  • Children 2 to 10 years: 100-200 mL after each loose stool or vomiting
  • Adults and children above 10 years: 200-400 mL after each loose stool or vomiting

Administration

  • Disperse the full contents of the sachet in 500 mL of pure drinking water
  • Do not mix with hot water or heat the prepared solution
  • Discard the unused prepared oral saline after 12 hours of preparation

Interaction

  • No known drug interactions

Precautions & Warnings

  • Supplementation with parenteral fluids may be needed for depressed renal function, severe continuing diarrhea, or critical fluid losses
