Indications
- Symptomatic relief of anxiety and tension associated with psychoneurosis
- Management of pruritus due to allergic conditions
- Sedative when used as premedication and following general anesthesia
Pharmacology
- Anxiolytic antihistamine of the piperazine class
- H1 receptor antagonist
- Primary skeletal muscle relaxation
- Bronchodilator activity
- Antihistaminic and analgesic effects
- Rapid absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
- Clinical effects usually noted within 15 to 30 minutes after oral administration
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 50-100 mg 4 times daily for anxiety and tension relief
- Children (>6 years): 50-100 mg daily in divided doses for anxiety and tension relief
- Adults: 25 mg 3 to 4 times daily for pruritus due to allergic conditions
- Interaction with meperidine and barbiturates
- No interference with the action of digitalis
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to hydroxyzine or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Mild and transitory side effects
- Drowsiness
- Headache
- Psychomotor impairment
- Antimuscarinic effects such as urinary retention, dry mouth, and blurred vision
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Rare side effects include hypotension, palpitation, arrhythmias, and liver dysfunction
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Inadequate clinical data in early pregnancy
- Contraindicated in early pregnancy
- Unknown excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Potentiating action when used with CNS depressants
- Drowsiness warning to patients
- Caution against driving or operating machinery
- Advised against simultaneous use of other CNS depressant drugs
- Start with half the recommended dose in the elderly
- Half of the normal dose in case of renal impairment
Overdose Effects
- Manifestation of hypersedation
- General supportive care and monitoring of vital signs
- Possible intravenous fluids and specific pressor agents for hypotension
- No specific antidote
- Hemodialysis may be indicated with concomitant barbiturate ingestion
