Description

  • A benzimidazole anthelmintic with vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity.

Indications

  • Treatment of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, and hydatid infestations.

Mode of Action

  • Blocks glucose uptake in helminths, immobilizes parasites, inhibits tubulin polymerization.

Dosage & Administration

  • 400 mg single dose for Enterobius vermicularis, Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, and Necator americanus.
  • 400 mg daily for 3 days for strongyloidiasis or taeniasis.
  • 200 mg single dose for children of 1-2 years.
  • Not recommended for children under 1 year.
  • 400 mg twice daily for hydatid disease in patients over 60 kg.
  • 15 mg/kg daily in two divided doses for patients under 60 kg.
  • 400 mg once daily for five days in giardiasis.

Interaction

  • No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions.

Contraindications

  • Not recommended for neonates.
  • Dose reduction may be indicated for children under 10 kg.
  • Avoid in pregnancy and lactation unless benefits outweigh risks.
  • No evidence to alter dose in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Monitor blood counts and liver function tests before and during each treatment cycle.
  • Avoid use in breastfeeding women.
  • Exclude pregnancy before starting treatment.
  • Use with constant medical supervision in Echinococcosis.
