Indications
- Treatment of genitourinary tract infections including gonorrhea
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of gastrointestinal tract infections
- Treatment of meningitis caused by N. meningitides
Pharmacology
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Binds to penicillin-binding proteins
- Inhibits final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis
- Causes bacterial lysis
Dosage
- Intra-articular
- Intraperitoneal
- Intrapleural
- Intravenous for meningitis
- Intravenous for intrapartum prophylaxis
- Oral for various infections
- Parenteral for susceptible infections
- Parenteral for septicaemia
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach
Interaction
- May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives
- May alter INR while on warfarin and phenindione
- May reduce efficacy of oral typhoid vaccines
- May reduce excretion of methotrexate
- Reduced excretion with probenecid and sulfinpyrazone
- Allopurinol increases ampicillin-induced skin reactions
- Reduced absorption with chloroquine
- Interference with bactericidal action by bacteriostatic antibacterials

Hypersensitivity to ampicillin and other penicillins
