Description

Dosage Information

  • 20 mg once daily for 4 weeks in duodenal ulceration
  • 8 weeks in gastric ulceration
  • 40 mg daily in severe or recurrent cases

Indications

  • Gastric and duodenal ulcer

  • Long-term management of acid reflux disease
  • Acid-related dyspepsia
  • Severe ulcerating reflux esophagitis

Mode of Action

  • Inhibitor of gastric acid secretion
  • Blocks hydrogen-potassium-adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase) enzyme system

Interaction Check

  • Reduced absorption of ketoconazole during Prazo treatment
  • Metabolised in the liver through cytochrome P450
  • Potential interaction with diazepam, phenytoin, warfarin, clarithromycin, and digoxin

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Omeprazole
  • Exclusion of malignancy before treatment

Side Effects

  • Mild and reversible adverse reactions
  • Skin rash, urticaria, pruritus
  • Photosensitivity, bullous eruption
  • Diarrhoea, headache
  • Constipation, nausea/vomiting

Pregnancy Lactation

  • No adverse effects of Omeprazole on pregnancy or fetus
  • Use during pregnancy possible
  • Lack of information on passage into breast milk

Precautions Warnings

  • Avoid concomitant use of clopidogrel and Prazo
  • Increased risk for osteoporosis-related fractures with PPI therapy
  • Atrophic gastritis with long-term treatment
  • Potential methotrexate toxicities with PPI use
